Dental Implants FAQ
Dental implants are rapidly becoming the preferred way to replace missing teeth, with good reason. Implants are the only solution that replaces the entire tooth, including the root, protecting jawbone health and restoring full chewing ability.
If you are considering dental implants, you’re sure to have questions. Below we’ve answered some of the most common questions our patients ask.
What is a dental implant?
Implants are replacement teeth that function like natural teeth. They are the only restorations that include an artificial root made of titanium that is placed in the jawbone to function as the root of the tooth. A crown or dental prosthetic is then attached to replace the visible portion of the missing tooth. The implant fuses with the surrounding bone and becomes an integral part of the jawbone.
How long does getting a dental implant take?
It depends on how many implants you need. It typically takes about an hour to place the implant screw in the jawbone but can take less time. Healing time is needed for the implant to fuse with the surrounding bone.
Does it hurt?
No. We use a local anesthetic to numb the area before surgery. You may also receive some form of sedation to relax you and alleviate any anxiety during the procedure.
How do I care for a dental implant?
You care for your artificial tooth just like a natural tooth. Brushing and flossing are crucial to remove bacteria and prevent plaque buildup that can lead to gum disease.
How long do dental implants last?
With proper care, dental implants last 30 years or more. For many patients, they last a lifetime.
What do I eat after implant surgery?
You’ll be on a soft diet for the first several days after implant placement. We will recommend an appropriate diet for you based on your needs.
